I discovered the Paleo movement about 3 years ago. I use the term movement instead of diet because diet implies that it’s something you do for a short while before reverting back to old eating habits. For me paleo has become so much more than just a way of eating. Paleo incorporates food, sleep, exercise, meditation and general mindfulness.
I’m not really sure how it happened but about 3 years i ended up at a point where i weighed nearly 14 stones. I was living a pretty reckless life, partying lots, staying up for days on end, i wasn’t health conscious in the slightest. I would barely consume 5 vegetables a week let alone 5 or 10 vegetables a day. I couldn’t cook, and my eating habits revolved around eating take out food and and general super high sugar fuelled junk food. It was definitely time to make a big change. I initially started out by cutting out sugar and being more active and this in itself made a difference. However it wasn’t until months later that i started reading more and getting really interested in nutrition and the science behind nutrition that i discovered the paleo diet. I read paleo literature from some brilliant paleo practitioners such as Rob Wolf, Chris Kresser, Dr.Terry Wahls and Mark Sisson and i was completely and utterly sold. Everything they write about food as medicine made complete sense and what’s more is that everything they talk about is based on evidence backed science. Paleo was being used to treat and reverse the symptoms of autoimmune conditions that had no known cure so i wondered what it could do for me.
The Paleo diet is the healthiest way you can eat because it is the ONLY nutritional approach that works with your genetics to help you stay lean, strong and energetic! Research in biology, biochemistry, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and many other disciplines indicate it is our modern diet, full of refined foods, trans fats and sugar, that is at the root of degenerative diseases such as obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, depression and infertility. – Robb Wolf
I’ve talked a little bit about the paleo diet but what exactly is the paleo diet? The paleo diet is a way of eating that is made up of the most nutrient dense foods. These are namely organ meats, bone broth, Good quality grass fed meats, seafood, probiotic fermented foods, Organic vegetables, eggs, fruit, nuts and seeds and healthy fats. Paleo also initially eliminates a broad range of foods from the diet. These foods are Dairy, gluten, wheat, grains, legumes, all processed foods and all seed and nut oils. Some of these can later be re introduced in to the diet to see if they are tolerated by the body and i will post about this at a later date
Although i didn’t do paleo as part as a on going health reason, i found that after a year of strictly following the paleo regime i had not only lost a considerable amount of weight but i had also cured my asthma. I had been a bad asthmatic since early childhood but on the paleo diet, I had all of a sudden gone from using my inhaler 4 or 5 times a day to using my inhaler just a couple of times in the last year. I had also noticed a considerable increase in energy and focus.
I know this has been quite a general post. I just wanted to cover the basics of paleo and talk a little about my back story. I promise i will go in to lots of detail on all the things i have touched upon in this post as well as some of the paleo pit falls i have fallen into myself. In the meantime if you have any questions feel free to shoot them at me 🙂
